The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Nagpur's Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) is gearing up to enhance its diagnostic services with the introduction of a specialized nuclear medicine department.

Dr. Raj Gajbhiye, the Dean of GMCH, highlighted that this new department will mark a significant advancement in patient care, particularly benefiting those dealing with heart conditions, cancer, and a variety of other health issues.

The idea for this department was initially conceived in the fiscal year 2017-18, with the District Planning Committee (DPC) allocating Rs. 8.3 crore for its development. However, final approval from the Department of Medical Education and Research was delayed.

Taking charge as the Dean, Dr. Gajbhiye revamped and resubmitted the proposal. This updated plan, requesting Rs. 9.5 crore, secured approval from the DPC this year, accelerating the tendering process.

With administrative obstacles now cleared, the construction of the department is set to commence soon.

Expressing his excitement, Dr. Gajbhiye said, “The nuclear medicine department will usher in a transformative era for GMCH. It will not only serve heart and cancer patients but will also cater to those with endocrine, thyroid, kidney, and neurological conditions. We'll have a dedicated team and resources allocated to this unit.”

Nuclear medicine is a specialized medical discipline that uses minimal amounts of radioactive substances, known as radiopharmaceuticals, to diagnose and treat a range of conditions. After administration, these substances concentrate in specific organs or tissues. Advanced imaging techniques then capture and analyze the emitted radiation, providing crucial insights into the health and function of these organs.

For cardiac patients, the department will offer a variety of advanced diagnostic procedures, further enhancing GMCH's medical offerings.
