Wipro GE Healthcare, a prominent innovator in medical technology, diagnostics, and digital solutions, is striving to enhance local manufacturing in India from the current 50 percent to 70–80 percent.

This endeavour coincides with a recent announcement of a substantial investment of Rs 8,000 crore over the next five years. The investment aims not only to strengthen the 'Make in India' initiative but also to establish a 'Make in India for the World' focus.

The products slated for export encompass positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) for cancer diagnosis, CT, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) coils.

In an interview with Elie Chaillot, President and CEO of GE Healthcare International, he highlighted the emergence of 'Made in India for the World' as a new focus. The goal is to deepen the supply chain, with plans to incrementally increase local production by 10–15 percent annually until reaching 70–80 per cent.

Chaillot emphasized that India is as competitive as China in terms of labor costs, but importing components from China could be costlier, hence the preference for local procurement.

He underscored India's scalability, enabling high levels of local manufacturing, a feat not feasible in many other countries due to scale or ecosystem limitations.

Wipro GE Healthcare has identified over 15 countries for exporting machines manufactured in India, including Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, the EU replacement market, and Latin America.

Chaillot aims for export revenues from India to double those from the domestic market.

Efforts are underway to leverage artificial intelligence to reduce the cost of MRI machines and accelerate the MRI process without compromising quality.

Chaillot acknowledged the impact of US-China geopolitical tensions on investments in China but emphasized the significance of India and China as neighbouring economies.

Transitioning from 'Make in India only' to 'Make in India for the World':

- Aim to increase local manufacturing to 80 percent

- Shifting focus to 'Make in India for the World'

- Seeking regulatory clearances for exports to 15 countries

- Leveraging AI to reduce MRI machine costs

- Targeting export revenues to double those from the domestic market.
